Lillian Rosenthal, also known as Linnie, was born on October 4th, 1899. Her parents were Russian immigrants. She was born in a small town called Spinnerstown in New Jersey. Her mother was a housewife and her father worked at a greeting card company.

However, Lillian always had an interest in learning more about science, technology and mathematics. She attended elementary and secondary schools nearby this card company.

When she entered college, she discovered that there were no classes taught entirely on science subjects that she wanted to learn about especially because of the product that this card company produced which was composed of beautiful ladies on the cards with cutesy sayings such as;

"A smile is sunshine" and "A kiss is still better. The plant lacked a science library where she could go to learn more about her field of interest. She finally decided to quit college and worked for a company related to the card company that employed her father.

In this new job, she was able to spend some time in the various departments and get training that enabled her to create cards from scratch.

She was also trained in designing, printing and sewing the cards together. This enterprise offered many inspirations since it had all sorts of people from different races who were living in harmony working together to achieve one goal; making money.

Lillian's dream did come true when she later became an owner at this company as well as its president later on. Her father still worked there too as a vice president.

Lillian was indeed a woman of class. Even at that time, women rarely owned businesses. In fact, her parents gave her the money to start up this business and provided her with training in order to successfully run it.

However, Lillian was not always interested in running a company; she wanted to be an inventor. However, there were no courses offered offered in the nation on inventing at the time that she started out.

She spent a lot of time searching for schools which taught these subjects and was able to finally find one which she had hoped would be suitable for her level of knowledge as well as experience she already had behind her when it came to business as well as engineering skills and knowledge. She graduated from this college with many honors after spending a lot of time there.

Her parents were so proud of her success in the business world and her great achievements in college. She was awarded the 1939 John Scott Medal from the Franklin Institute for inventing the dice and counter machine which revolutionized the garment industry.
